Bible Study Tip of the Month

Can We Really Get Too Much Bible?

William J. Brown

Let me answer this one right off the top. No.

I guess if all we do is study, and we forget our other responsibilities, that could present a problem. But then that isn't getting too much Bible. That's engaging in too much irresponsibility.

The fact is, we can't get too much of God's Word as far as our spiritual lives are concerned.

A few days ago, I was reading about a popular pastor and Bible teacher in a well known publication. In an interview, this man of God revealed that he put between 25 and 30 hours of Bible study in a week. In a five day work week that's about five to six hours a day!

I have to confess sometimes I have trouble just squeezing in an average of two hours a day into my hectic schedule. That man has my weekly average licked in about two days!

Now, I confess, he is a pastor who preaches and teaches for a living. But pastors are busy folk too (in fact, busier than most of us realize!) They have congregations and crowds clammering for their attention.

The pastor in the interview leads a church of several thousand. He has huge responsibilites that go along with his position. Yet, he finds time in his busy schedule to put five or six hours a day into God's Word.

Now, we probably could never put that much time into pure Bible study. I'm not writing this to increase your holiday blues. What I am saying is, if such a busy pastor can put that much time into Bible study, couldn't we put just a little more effort into ours?

Instead of opening the Bible, flipping to our passage, drumming out a few lines under our breath and slamming it shut for the day, couldn't we put maybe an hour or more into bathing ourselves in God's Love Letter to us?

Our prayer should be that God would give us a greater desire to learn His Word. I Peter 2:2 says that we should...

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.

Spiritual growth comes through craving God's Word. And those desires are met through the study of God's Word. This new year, let's make a greater effort to give God the time He deserves by diligently studying His Word more.

That's it for this month. I hope this was a help. We'll have more next month.

Until then...

Keep up the good work. And...

Keep the faith!

God bless!

Bible Study Starters of the Month

Here are a couple ideas to jump-start your brain for your personal Bible study…

1. Did you make any New Year resolutions? Are they good resolutions that honor God? Using prayer and your Bible, ask God if the goals you've set are really honoring to Him.

2. Search for the word "new" in your Bible by using a concordance or Bible software. What do you find?

Bible Study Project of the Month

Put on your thinking caps this month...

It's a new year. Why not study about the new life in Christ? First, get a study Bible with cross references (those little letters and numbers next to the words in your Bible).

Start with II Corinthians 5:17 and go from there, carefully following and looking up the cross references related to your topic. (Thomson Chain-Reference Bibles work wonderfully for this kind of study. Bible software may be useful as well.)

And of course...

Contact us through our “Contact Page” and tell us what you found. We're interested to hear what your studies turn up!

What’s New?

Wow! What a busy time of year! We've still got many goals that we need to meet. Slowly but surely we'll have some updated Bible studies and Bible reference materials for the site. Please be patient. These things take time!

Also, we still have a backlog of tests for our basic Bible study series. We're getting caught up. But just like everything else, it seems like demand is out-performing our best performance!

We're about two months behind. So if you've taken tests recently, please be patient. We'll get those scored in the order we receive them. It may take a little time. But we're working on it. Thanks for your patience.

That about wraps it up for this month. We hope you enjoyed this e-zine provided by Bible-Student-Online.org.

God bless!
