Here are Bible study books and more from Bill's bookshelf!
This section is about more than just Bible study books. I've used this page to throw together a few miscellaneous volumes that don't seem to have a place anywhere else. Most (not all) you can just sit down with (along with a steaming cup of coffee) and just read through at your leisure. Some of the more academic ones are better for pure reference. Some of these even I haven't read all the way through! So this certainly is not a recommendation for "light reading." But some of these you may find interesting as just pure reading material. If so, go for it! And once more... Take what you read and shove it under the blinding light of Scripture. These men aren't fallible. But they do have many useful things to say. Just make sure you compare what they say with the Bible. God bless you in your study of these Bible study books.
Books About the Bible
How We Got Our BibleAuthor - W.H. Griffith Thomas Publisher - Dallas Seminary Press This one is a reprint. The edition I have is from 1984. It's worth getting if you can find it. I'm not sure if it's in print anymore. But my opinion is it should be. Thomas wrote at the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth. But his writing is surprisingly simple for such a learned man as he was. He deals with the history of the Bible in a clear (gasp!) and concise (double gasp!) way. Whether the edition I have is abridged or not I don't really know. But I don't care because it's a must have Bible study book.
Our Bible Author - Walter Scott Publisher - Lord's Work Trust/ Online Bible Another great volume about the history of our Bible. I have the e-version of this one provided through Online Bible. Scott took a conservative stance on the Scriptures, a refreshing change from what many say today. A great addition to any library if you can find it. If not, get Online Bible and download a copy for yourself.
The Truth War Author - Dr. John F. MacArthur Jr. Publisher - Thomas Nelson This one isn't as much about the Bible as about biblical Truth. It's a great exposition of the book of Jude regarding the Truth of God's Word and the perversion of false teachers. It's simply written and an excellant read.
Bible Study Books
Commenting on CommentariesAuthor - Charles Haddon Spurgeon Publisher - Online Bible Once again, I have the electronic version. I love Charles Spurgeon. He had amazing powers of perception not only in expositing Scripture but in understanding modern trends. He stood for Truth in an age when many stood for nothing. This ideal is reflected in all his books including this one. Good read.
Interpretation of Scriptures Author - Arthur W. Pink Publisher - Yep! Online Bible again! Pink deals with proper methods of interpretation. Watch out though! I like Mr. Pink. But sometimes he tends to become extremely opinionated. Take some of what he says with the proverbial grain of salt. But learn from his great insights.
How to Get the Most from God's Word Author - John F. MacArthur Jr. Publisher - Word Publishing And again Dr. MacArthur produced an easy to understand volume. This time he tackles Bible study itself. A great Bible study book for beginners as well as seasoned Bible students.
Bible Doctrine Books
Great Doctrines of the Bible SeriesAuthor - W.A. Criswell Publisher - Zondervan These little jewels come from the heart of the great twentieth century preacher W.A. Criswell. Criswell was quite a man. I think you'll agree with me if you decide to pick up a volume or two of this series.
Major Bible Themes Author - Lewis Sperry Chafer and edited by John Walvoord Publisher - Zondervan I understand why Dr. Chafer was so popular. He made difficult concepts simple to understand. But beware of some of his teachings on salvation. They tend to be more "easy" than "simple." But, overall, this is a great volume and a must-have for any Bible student.
The Gospel According to Jesus Author - Dr. John F. MacArthur Jr. Publisher - Zondervan This volume deals with just one doctrine. But it's a doctrine that forms the foundation for all other Bible doctrines... Salvation. This is probably one of the clearest (and certainly most controversial) books written on salvation in the twentieth century. It's still in print today. A defining argument for the "Lordship of Christ" idea.
The Great Doctrines of the Bible Author - William Evans Publisher - Moody Press Not to be confused with Criswell's series. This is one volume. I like it because it lays out doctrine in an easily read outline format. Great for studying or just reading, Evans clearly and accurately states biblical evidence for many of the doctrines of the Church.
